Aro Hospital suspends nursing school activities indefinitely after student’s d+ath sparks unrest

The management of Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has indefinitely suspended all academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the d+ath of a student, which reportedly triggered unrest within the institution.

The suspension was announced in a notice issued on Tuesday and signed by the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.

According to the notice, the directive affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation. Resident students were also directed to vacate their hostels immediately.

The management said the decision followed the d+ath of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which reportedly sparked unrest within the hospital community.

“This decision follows the unfortunate demise of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which has reportedly resulted in student unrest within the hospital community,” the notice stated.

The hospital explained that the suspension was necessary to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s d+ath.

It urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive pending further communication, while expressing regret over the inconvenience caused.

Taiwo, a Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing student reportedly living with asthma, d+ied at the institution under controversial circumstances, prompting protests by fellow students who alleged negligence in the handling of his medical emergency.

His d+ath sparked outrage and calls for an investigation into the institution’s emergency healthcare response system.

An eyewitness also alleged that Taiwo’s d+ath was the second student d+ath recorded at the institution this year, raising further concerns among students and colleagues.
